This is closely related to the problem of getting nice spacing (especially around horizontal rules) in general alignments (tables) with vertical rules: again it is necessary to measure the height plus depth of every entry in a row and put in a suitable sized strut. Thus a solution would have many useful applications: one day I must think more about it: I am sure it is feasible. But the \left \rigght problem is, in some sense, worse as it involves, potentially, many rows! chris ------------------------------------------------------ Subject: Hoenig's Duerer fonts Date: Sat, 4 Aug 90 17:26:32 bst From: SPQR@UK.AC.SOUTHAMPTON.ECS I have copied Alan Hoenig's `duerer' fonts into the archive at Aston (from ymir, thanks Don Hosek); see the 1990 TUG Conference Proceedings for a description. This is not an easy task. It does not require a Modula-2 expert. It amounts to replacing thousands of 4-digit numbers in the source code by other 4-digit numbers. And it would only be a stop-gap measure, since OzTeX should be converted to TeX 3.0 now anyway... NEVERTHELESS, I offer to coordinate the task of increasing the hash size in the OzTeX source code. If I get 20 volunteers, I will go ahead with it. In order to help with this, you must have: * MPW shell, latest version not necessary * OzTeX 1.2 source code * A copy of the book "TeX: The Program", by D. Knuth (Computers and Typesetting, volume B) * Several hours of time to spend Useful, but not absolutely necessary: * Knowledge of the basic syntax of Pascal and of Modula-2 Not required (since your part won't compile anyway by itself): * TML Modula-2 compiler If you want to help, e-mail me at one of the addresses below. I will reply with details of what is involved. Then, if you STILL want to go ahead, then I will give you your particular assignment. ------------------------------------------------------ Subject: RE: OzTeX hash size increase Date: Wed, 08 Aug 90 13:19:28 BST From: David Osborne In UKTeX V90 #25, Chris Rowley wrote: > > > Does anyone have a version of OzTeX which has been generated > > with a hash size of > 5,000? > > > My enquiries suggest not: > So here is a plea to any MODULA2 hackers out there--- > Please help us rectify this situation, otherwise OzTeX will go the > way of the Dodo (which, apparently, was quite a handsome bird). i had an airmail letter this morning from Andrew Trevorrow, who's now in India, but hard at work on his Mac IIcx on the latest version of OzTeX. he says he has got a TeX V3 implementation under test now, for inclusion in the next release, and that nearly all the important parameters (mem_max, hash_size, trie_size, font_mem_size, etc) will be settable in a config file. this should solve the hash_size problem. when? well, Andrew mentions ``hopefully, Sept. some time'' for OzTeX 1.3 and that he's got ``some other goodies planned for this new version''. this isn't a firm date, you understand, but that's the intention. --dave osborne university of nottingham & aston TeX archive group ------------------------------------------------------ Subject: Footnote Problem in LaTeX From: "M.DAVISON" Date: Mon, 6 Aug 90 11:56 GMT One of our users has a problem (in LaTeX) whereby the same footnote applies to several places in the text but she wants the footnote to appear only once per page i.e. line+ of text . . line+ of text __________________________ +This is the footnote where + is the dagger footnote symbol The document is approx. 100 pages long so we would like the macro to take account of page breaks automatically. This is a natty little program by Gustav Neumann which converts files in Microsoft paint (.msp) or PCL format into a .pxl font file, with corresponding .tfm file. This lets you print the results on any device (you can convert to pk format easily). Give it a try on your files... I compiled it on my Unix system, and it worked fine with xdvi, but dvitops only printed very very small simulacra of the pictures. No doubt this can be sorted out. See the files in [tex-archive.drivers.bitpxl] eg [tex-archive.drivers.bitpxl]read.me The example binary files have been boo-encoded. I have not put an executable version in there. sebastian rahtz ------------------------------------------------------ Subject: Renaming large numbers of files From: Dr R M Damerell (RHBNC) Date: Fri, 3 Aug 90 10:05:58 BST One of the difficulties of getting files from the various archives is that everybody and his dog has different conventions about file names. So by the time a file has been passed from author to archive to you, the name is often altered. You can always rename one file but that is not much use if you have hundreds. I have therefore written a GNU Emacs function called dired-query-rename which works vaguely like query-replace, but with filenames. Current version is experimental. If you want to try it, it can be fetched by FTP (if you have FTP access) from site: uk.ac.rhbnc.vax login anonymous, no password directory uhah:[208.public] files: rename.el (program. Uses GNU Emacs v. 18.54. ) rename.tex (how to use, needs Tugboat macros) Bug reports to me please. Ofered with absolutely no guarantee. All output is transformed by the driver, not by the printer. This has the disadvantage that more printer memory (and time) is required and that landscape graphics files cannot be inserted. All dvidrv members can do all the transformations! ------- End of forwarded message ------- ------------------------------------------------------ Subject: PCDOT Date: Mon, 6 Aug 90 13:57 GMT From: RBAILEY@UK.AC.AFRC.RESB Stephen Pippen reports a problem using PCDOT on a Star LC10 with single sheet feed. I had exactly the same problem on an Epson LQ1500. There are two solutions. (1) Make sure that the printer is set to single sheet mode by dip switches or other hardware, not by software commands. This is because PCDOT begins by initialising the printer, which includes cancelling all software ssettings of the printer. (2) Nag Lance Carnes to produce a PCDOT whose options include any necessary printer settings, like single sheet, just as they include paper size. After 18 months of my nagging his staff did indeed do this for me (PCDOT/LQ version 3.01) but I have not tested it because (wait for it) the people-in-charge-machines here removed the Epson the day before the new PCDOT arrived. Good luck. Please tell UKTeX what solution you eventually adopt.
