bmeps + dvips add-on

^{Bmeps consists of a command line tool and a library for
bitmap-to-EPS conversion.

A subdirectory contains some modified dvips sources to
use the bmeps library directly from dvips.}

converts PNG, JPEG and NetPBM ¹ to EPS
minimizes EPS output size by
- automatic color- to grayscale conversion (if requested)
- run-length-compression ²
- ASCII-85-encoding instead of ASCII-Hex-encoding ²
- flate compression ³
uses alpha channels in PNG images
- to create EPS image masks ³
- mix against a user specified background color
contains sources for dvips modifications for on-the-fly-conversion without external programs

Note: Bmeps does not use DCT compression in EPS output. Converting JPEG files to EPS using bmeps increases file size significantly in most cases. So I recommend to use other programs for JPEG-to-EPS conversion, i.e. imgtops2 (http://www.cs.washington.edu/homes/dougz/postscript/imgtops2) and jpeg2ps (http://www.pdflib.com/jpeg2ps/index.html).
